Today I made a bold, life changing decision...I walked right into Macy's, up to the MAC counter and told the makeup artist "I want to buy some red lipstick". Yeah I know what your thinking, "This is a life changing decision?" Well maybe not, but in a way it is for me! I never wear lipstick, I only wear Chapstick like all the time. So anyway, the lovely gal at the counter gave me some amazing tips to get your red lips to last and to prevent clumping. I thought I would share those tips with you lovely folks to maybe inspire you to go out and try a new lip color. Its crazy how a tube of lipstick makes you feel like a brand new woman!
1. Exfoliate The Lips
The girl at the MAC counter told me a good way to prep your lips at home is to take a firm toothbrush and literally brush your lips. She said this is a great way to remove a lot of the dead skin, and leave your lips nice and smooth. This will also help the lipstick go on evenly, and stay for longer.
2. Use a conditioner that doesn't contain oil
Now honestly, I don't know where you can find this other than a makeup store, but it does work nicely. You put the conditioner on your lips before you apply your lipstick. If you prefer a matte color lipstick like I do, putting on the lip conditioner will allow some shine to come through. It also conditions your lips allowing them to not dry out as easily, it also acts as a primer to keep that lipstick looking fresh.
3. Dont apply Chapstick over your lipstick during the day!
I never knew this, and this is something I do quite often. The MAC employee told me that chap stick contains a lot of oils, which makes your lipstick not stay as long, and will actually help it to clump up a lot faster. The oil breaks down the lipstick, and causes it to kind of mush together which causes clumping and makes your lipstick more prone to smearing.
4. If you are going to pull off a bold lip, go with a toned down overall makeup application.
This is perfect for me because I dont have the time or energy to apply a full eyeshadow, eye liner, mascara, blush etc in the morning before work. Red lips will allow me to look put together, while taking less time. A red lip is a bold statement, and putting on to much face makeup will make you look like a cheap hooker. The best look to match a red lip is a simple cat eye. This look is really in right now, and is the perfect addition to your new bold lips!
5. Lip Liner is a must!
I never knew this, but the girl at MAC told me the way to get the perfect lips, and to make the color really pop is to always apply a lip liner in a matching shade to your lipstick. She also let me know that this also helps a lot with staying power. The liner helps keep the lipstick on the lips and not to smear all over your face.
Here are some famous gals that are infamous for donning the bold, red lip!
